My Lenten Journey – cuc6ksrvdava
Lent, the time for all good Catholics to suffer.
In the past 10 years, God and I haven’t always been the best of friends. But as time unfolded, I realized I was the one with the problem regarding our friendship– not Him. He never left my side. Just as any given moment got its darkest, He somehow swooped in to help, guiding me to my rightful place in life.
To thank Him, I’ve decided to take Lent seriously for a change. As we know, it is our church’s holiest of all seasons and one that should be honored. It’s not just about bunnies and candy, but about a life relinquished for the love of His people – to save us all from our wicked ways and lead us to our home in heaven.
I used to think abstaining was just a way for people to diet or get sober, but say they’re doing it for God. Recently, I’ve come to appreciate all the sacrifices Jesus made for us (particularly me) and it’s time I did something in return.
To make my way back into the fold, I vow to go to church regularly, do something for someone every day and actually give up one of my most desired vices.
So – no more wine for 40 days! Not to say I won’t have a vodka tonic occasionally, but giving up the vino will be a huge challenge for me.
As the days go by, I will blog on how I’m doing. The last time I gave up anything for Lent was when I was 10 years old. I let go of my sweet tooth and didn’t have a piece of candy the entire time. Needless to say, I went through severe withdrawal, became very crabby, but I did survive and was actually very proud of myself. 48 years later, I’m here to do it again.
Come along for the journey and share your thoughts.
